A reflexive action returns to its subject: Ana se lava means “Ana washes herself.” A reciprocal action passes between people: Ana y Luis se ayudan means “Ana and Luis help each other.” Both can use se, so the pronoun alone does not tell the full story. Look at who performs the action, who receives it, and what the situation makes possible.
Reflexive means the subject acts on itself
Lavo el coche means “I wash the car.” Me lavo means “I wash myself.” The subject is the person doing the washing in both sentences; in the second, that same person also receives it. Compare Ana peina a su hija (Ana combs her daughter’s hair) and Ana se peina (Ana combs her own hair).
A body part often appears with a definite article: Me lavo las manos, “I wash my hands.” Here the hands are what is washed, and me identifies the person affected. You do not need to reproduce English “my” with mis in this everyday expression.
Match the pronoun and verb to the subject
| Subject | Reflexive example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| yo | me lavo | I wash myself |
| tú | te lavas | you wash yourself |
| ella / usted | se lava | she washes herself; you wash yourself |
| nosotros | nos lavamos | we wash ourselves |
| ellos / ustedes | se lavan | they wash themselves; you wash yourselves |
With vosotros, use os laváis. Notice two choices: nos identifies the reflexive relationship, while lavamos agrees with nosotros. Leaving the verb as lavar after every pronoun would miss that second job.
Reciprocal means people act on one another
Nos escribimos cada semana commonly means “We write to each other every week.” Los vecinos se ayudan means “The neighbors help each other.” A reciprocal reading needs more than one participant, but a plural subject alone does not prove it: Los niños se lavan may simply mean the children each wash themselves.
The verb and situation help. If a reading is unclear, add el uno al otro, la una a la otra, or another appropriate form: Ana y Luis se miran el uno al otro, “Ana and Luis look at each other.” Mutuamente also makes a mutual relationship explicit in suitable contexts.
Use context to resolve nos and se
They look at themselves in the mirror, in the ordinary reading.
They look at each other.
For a reflexive meaning, a sí mismos can add emphasis: Se miran a sí mismos, “They look at themselves.” You rarely need to add the longer phrase when the situation is already clear.
Think of a photograph. Is each person looking at their own reflection, or are two people exchanging a look? Describe the scene first. The same short pronoun can accompany both scenes, so grammar and real-world context work together.
Not every verb with se means “do it to yourself”
Me arrepiento means “I regret it,” not “I regret myself.” Me voy commonly means “I am leaving.” These are pronominal patterns whose meanings should be learned as complete expressions. A dictionary infinitive ending in -se tells you to use the matching pronoun in that construction; it does not guarantee a literal reflexive translation.
Placement follows familiar patterns: Me quiero lavar and Quiero lavarme both mean “I want to wash myself.” A negative comes before a preceding pronoun: No me lavo aquí. Also distinguish pronoun se from accented sé in No sé, “I do not know.” They are different words.
Practice: picture the participants
Identify the intended meaning. 1. Me miro en el espejo. 2. Nos mandamos mensajes el uno al otro. 3. Los niños se ponen sus propios abrigos. 4. Me arrepiento de la decisión. Then complete: Yo quiero ___ temprano with levantarse.

1. Reflexive: I look at myself. 2. Reciprocal: we send each other messages. 3. Each child puts on their own coat; the reading is reflexive, not mutual. 4. A pronominal verb meaning “I regret the decision”; avoid a literal “myself” translation. The final sentence is Yo quiero levantarme temprano, “I want to get up early.” Me quiero levantar temprano also works.
Describe one part of your morning routine and one thing friends do for each other. Keep the pronoun, verb, and intended relationship together.
